FAQ — Residency Permit
General
What is a residence permit?
A residence permit (ikamet izni) allows foreign nationals to live legally in Türkiye for an extended period. It is required if you intend to stay longer than your visa-free or visa-permitted period (usually 90 days within 180 days).
What types of residence permit does Ikamet handle?
- Short-term residence permit — for property owners, students, and general stays
- Family residence permit — for spouses and children of Turkish citizens or permit holders
- Long-term residence permit — after 8 years of continuous legal residence
- Humanitarian residence permit — for specific circumstances assessed individually
Do I need a residence permit if I just arrived in Türkiye?
If you plan to stay more than 90 days within any 180-day period, yes. You should apply for a residence permit before your allowed stay expires. Do not wait until you have overstayed.
Documents
What documents do I need?
The standard document set for a short-term residence permit:
- Valid passport (with at least 60 days validity beyond your requested permit end date)
- Completed application form (Ikamet prepares this)
- Biometric photo (1 × biometric, white background)
- Proof of address in Türkiye (rental contract, notarised)
- Health insurance valid in Türkiye for the full permit period
- Payment receipt for the permit card fee
Additional documents may be required depending on your permit category and individual circumstances. Your agent will confirm exactly what you need.
Does my health insurance need to be Turkish?
It must be valid in Türkiye. An international policy that explicitly covers Türkiye is acceptable. Your agent can arrange Turkish health insurance if needed.
My rental contract is not in my name. Is that a problem?
A notarised rental contract in your name is the standard requirement. If you are staying with a friend or family member, a notarised letter from the property owner confirming your stay may be accepted. Discuss your situation with your agent before collecting documents.
Process and timeline
How long does the process take?
After your appointment at the immigration office:
- Processing typically takes 30–90 days
- Some cases take longer depending on the immigration office and workload
- Your agent will monitor and follow up on your behalf
How do I get an appointment?
Appointments are booked through the Turkish immigration appointment system (e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr). Ikamet handles this for you.
Can I travel outside Türkiye while my application is being processed?
Once you have submitted your application and received your appointment reference, you are considered to have a legal basis for staying. However, if you leave Türkiye before your permit is issued, re-entry is at the discretion of border control. Consult your agent before travelling during a pending application.
What happens at the immigration appointment?
You attend in person with your original documents. The officer reviews your documents, takes your biometrics (fingerprints and photo), and confirms your application. Your agent will brief you on exactly what to bring and what to expect.
Renewals
When should I renew my residence permit?
Apply to renew at least 60 days before your permit expires. Ikamet will send you a reminder 90 days before expiry.
What happens if my permit expires before I renew?
An expired permit means you are technically overstaying. This can affect future permit applications. Contact Ikamet immediately if your permit is close to expiry and you have not yet started the renewal process.
Can I renew for a longer period?
Short-term permits are typically issued for 1–2 years. The duration depends on your rental contract and other supporting documents. Your agent will advise what duration to request.
Other questions
Can I work on a residence permit?
A standard short-term or family residence permit does not permit you to work in Türkiye. You need a separate work permit to work legally. See our Work Permit FAQ.
What is the difference between a residence permit and citizenship?
A residence permit allows you to live in Türkiye but you remain a foreign national. Citizenship makes you a Turkish citizen. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, you may be eligible to apply for citizenship. See ikamet.com for more on the citizenship process.
I have more questions. Who do I contact?
